Thanksgiving through winter break is when activity credits quietly expire. Here is how families protect prepaid class value through the holidays.

Holiday season looks festive on Instagram. On a family calendar, it looks like three weeks of conflicts stacked on top of swim, dance, and soccer.

Thanksgiving travel. Early school dismissals. Relatives visiting. Winter break camps. Studios that close for a week — or stay open while your kid is out of town. This is when activity credits pile up and expire, often in the same month.

Why holiday schedule changes burn credits

Studios still run on their calendar. Your family runs on everyone else's. The mismatch creates three traps:

You cancel inside the window. A flight booked two weeks out is fine. A last-minute invite to grandma's is not — if the studio needs 24–48 hours notice.
Makeups expire during the break. You earn a credit on December 3. The studio closes December 20–January 2. Your 14-day window dies while nobody is teaching.
You assume "they know it's the holidays." They do not. No email = no credit at most studios.

Knowing the traps is half the save. Acting before Thanksgiving is the other half.

Map the holiday conflict window early

In early November (or whenever your school posts the holiday calendar), block these dates:

Thanksgiving week (including travel days)
Last week of school before break
Winter break itself
First week back in January (sick season spike)

Then overlay each kid's class days. Circle every conflict. That list is your cancellation and makeup work queue — not a vague "we'll figure it out."

Cancellation windows still apply in December

Holiday goodwill does not rewrite policy. Common patterns:

If your studio emails a modified holiday schedule, read it. Some studios cancel certain classes and still require you to opt out of others. Ambiguity is where $40–$60 disappears.

Makeup traps unique to the holidays

Short expiry + studio closure. A 14-day makeup window that overlaps a two-week closure is a credit graveyard. Ask (politely, in writing) whether the window pauses during closure. Some studios extend; many do not unless you ask.

Makeup slots vanish in January. Everyone comes back sick, behind, and needing makeups. The popular Tuesday 4pm slot books out. Book as soon as the credit is issued — even if you later reschedule.

"We'll use it after the new year" never happens. January is chaos. Treat makeup booking like paying a bill due this week.

A simple holiday credit checklist

Two weeks before Thanksgiving: list every class that conflicts with travel or guests.
Cancel inside the window for each one; save confirmation emails.
Log every credit with expiry date and how to book a makeup.
Book makeups before the studio's holiday closure when possible.
First Sunday of January: re-check unused credits before they age out.
